Great Teams

We’re kicking off a team meeting, there’s a frenzied energy in the room, colleagues arriving from their different spaces, heads full, nods and glances exchanged, time ticking, work to be done, stakes high. This needs to go well… but will it?

Teams are the main unit of work in most organisations.
But how often are they a great unit of work?

A team made up of great people, doesn’t automatically result in high performance. Unfortunately teams often fail to perform well despite everyone’s best intentions.

The benefits of high performing teams - to organisations, stakeholders, customers and the individuals that work in them - are undisputed. Executives are up to five times more productive when working in one versus an average team.

Colorful sticky notes with various handwritten words and phrases such as "safe hands," "wise old bird," and "objective" on a wall or board.

So what makes the difference between a team of all stars and an all star team? Regardless of the sector they operate in, the qualities built into all all star teams are;

Strong Leadership; Leadership that understands and can create and maintain a high performance environment as well as form deep connections with individual team members.

Clear Purpose – The team why; what can you uniquely do together that you cannot do alone.

Deep Sense of Belonging; Belonging has a profound effect on behaviour. It enables creativity, problem solving and constructive feedback and disagreement

Collective Self awareness; Where each individual deeply understand how their role contributes to achieving the team purpose.

Team Growth mindset; How the team supports and raises each other up to meet team goals and where team growth is placed above individual success

When a group of people share these 5 qualities their brain chemistry alters. Higher levels of oxytocin and lower levels of cortisol are produced.

This is the neurological definition of teaming… the team glue, their X factor, and how some teams become more than the sum of their parts… and why some never do.
